Summary

The story “Neem Baba” is a conversation between a young girl named Amber and an ancient neem tree, which she affectionately calls Neem Baba. Amber sits in the shade of the neem tree in her courtyard and feels as though the tree is whispering to her. She begins to talk to the tree, and Neem Baba responds kindly, sharing many interesting facts about itself.

Neem Baba tells Amber that it has existed for millions of years and has spread from India to other parts of the world, including Asia, Africa, and even America. The tree has several names, given in different languages, such as Nimb, Leemba, and Nimbo, with the name Neem coming from Iran.

As their conversation continues, Amber learns about the many uses of the neem tree. Neem Baba explains how its leaves, twigs, bark, flowers, fruits, and roots are used for medicinal purposes, helping to cure diseases like measles and soothing itching. Neem leaves destroy germs, and neem seed powder is helpful to farmers in protecting crops from insects and termites. The powder can also be used to stop mosquitoes from breeding in stagnant water, and neem oil is used in making soaps, toothpaste, and furniture that termites cannot destroy.

Throughout the story, Amber is amazed by how useful the neem tree is to humans, not only in medicine but also in agriculture and everyday life. Neem Baba humbly explains that it is well-known because of its usefulness. By the end of their conversation, Amber promises to discover more about the neem tree when she grows up, and Neem Baba blesses her.

The text is an engaging way of teaching children about the importance and versatility of the neem tree, while also introducing them to the concept of personification, where the tree is given human-like qualities.
