“Mellidora”
1. There was once a young prince who wished to get married. He went to consult his aunt, who was a wise woman.
1. एक बार की बात है, एक युवा राजकुमार था जो शादी करना चाहता था। वह अपनी चाची के पास सलाह लेने गया, जो एक बुद्धिमान महिला थीं।
2. “Next week,” he said, “the king of the Land-on-the-other side-of-the-Mountains is holding a great festival in honour of the coming of age of his son, and he has invited me to stay at the court. There will be many beautiful ladies there, and I am hoping that I may be able to find a wife among them. But how shall I know whom to choose?
2. “अगले हफ्ते,” उसने कहा, “पहाड़ों के दूसरी ओर वाले देश का राजा अपने बेटे के बड़े होने की खुशी में एक बड़ा उत्सव मना रहा है, और उसने मुझे अपने दरबार में रुकने के लिए आमंत्रित किया है। वहाँ बहुत सी सुंदर युवतियाँ होंगी, और मुझे आशा है कि मैं उनके बीच अपनी पत्नी चुन सकूँगा। लेकिन मैं कैसे जानूँ कि किसे चुनना है?”
3. “You are welcome to have my advice,” said his aunt. “Choose a girl who laughs when others cry, and cries when others laugh, and you will not go far wrong.”
3. “तुम मेरी सलाह ले सकते हो,” उसकी चाची ने कहा। “उस लड़की को चुनो जो तब हँसे जब बाकी सब रो रहे हों, और तब रोए जब बाकी सब हँस रहे हों। तब तुम ज्यादा गलती नहीं करोगे।”
4. The prince thought the advice rather strange, but he had great confidence in her wisdom. “In any case,”he said, “I can go to the festival and see what comes of it.”
4. राजकुमार को यह सलाह थोड़ी अजीब लगी, लेकिन उसे अपनी चाची की बुद्धिमानी पर पूरा विश्वास था। “खैर,” उसने कहा, “मैं उत्सव में जा ही सकता हूँ और देख सकता हूँ कि क्या होता है।”
5. There were many lovely ladies at the festival. On the second day, a picnic was to take place in a woodland glade some way from the palace. The road was rough and very muddy.The princes and knights rode on horseback; the ladies travelled in carriages.
5. उत्सव में बहुत सी सुंदर युवतियाँ थीं। दूसरे दिन एक पिकनिक का आयोजन किया गया, जो महल से कुछ दूरी पर एक जंगल के खुले स्थान में होना था। रास्ता ऊबड़-खाबड़ और बहुत कीचड़ भरा था। राजकुमार और योद्धा घोड़ों पर सवार हुए; और युवतियाँ बग्घियों में यात्रा कर रही थीं।
6. But the horses of one of the carriages became unmanageable. The carriage turned over, and the six ladies who rode in it all tumbled into the ditch at the side of the road.
6. लेकिन एक बग्घी के घोड़े बेकाबू हो गए। बग्घी उलट गई, और उसमें बैठी छहों युवतियाँ सड़क के किनारे की खाई में गिर गईं।
7. It was a rather deep ditch, and there was water at the bottom of it, so that it was quite a business getting them all out, though fortunately none of them was seriously hurt. The prince happened to be riding beside the carriage, and he helped the weeping ladies, one by one, to a seat on the bank. They presented a sorry spectacle with their pretty frocks all muddy and their pretty hats all on one side.
7. वह खाई काफी गहरी थी और उसके नीचे पानी भी था, इसलिए सभी को बाहर निकालना एक कठिन काम था। लेकिन सौभाग्य से किसी को गंभीर चोट नहीं आई। राजकुमार उस बग्घी के पास ही सवारी कर रहा था, और उसने रोती हुई युवतियों को एक-एक करके खाई से निकालकर किनारे पर बैठने में मदद की। वे सब बहुत बुरी हालत में थीं—उनके सुंदर कपड़े कीचड़ से सने थे और सुंदर टोपियाँ एक ओर टेढ़ी हो गई थीं।
8. But when the prince came to the sixth lady, he found her sitting at the bottom of the ditch, laughing. Her hat had come off, her hair had come down, she was covered with mud from head to foot, and her hands were covered with nettle stings. But she laughed all the same.
8. लेकिन जब राजकुमार छठी युवती के पास पहुँचा, तो उसने देखा कि वह खाई के नीचे बैठी हँस रही थी। उसकी टोपी गिर चुकी थी, बाल बिखरे हुए थे, वह सिर से पाँव तक कीचड़ से सनी हुई थी, और उसके हाथों में बिच्छू बूटी (nettles) के डंक थे। फिर भी वह हँस रही थी।
9. “We must have looked so funny, all tumbling into the ditch,” she said. “I wish I could have seen it. We’re still rather a funny sight, aren’t we?” And she looked at herself and up at the weeping ladies, and laughed again.
9. “हम सब जब खाई में गिरे होंगे तो कितने मज़ेदार लग रहे होंगे,” उसने कहा। “काश मैं वह देख पाती! अभी भी हम सब कितने अजीब से दिख रहे हैं, है ना?” उसने खुद को और रोती हुई युवतियों को देखा, और फिर से हँस पड़ी।
10. There was so much mud on her face that the prince could not see what she really looked like, but he remembered the words of his aunt.
10. उसके चेहरे पर इतना कीचड़ था कि राजकुमार उसकी असली शक्ल नहीं देख सका, लेकिन उसे अपनी चाची की बात याद आ गई।
11. “What is the name of the sixth lady?” he asked, when they had all been sent home. “The one who laughed?”
11. “छठी युवती का नाम क्या है?” उसने पूछा, जब सभी को घर भेज दिया गया। “वही जो हँस रही थी?”
12. “Mellidora,” he was told.
12. “मेलिडोरा,” उसे बताया गया।
13. So in the evening he sought out Mellidora and found that she was a beautiful and charming person; so much so that he lost his heart to her.
13. तो शाम को राजकुमार ने मेलिडोरा को खोजा और पाया कि वह एक सुंदर और आकर्षक व्यक्तित्व वाली युवती है। वह इतनी मनमोहक थी कि राजकुमार को उससे प्रेम हो गया।
14. ‘But I must do nothing in a hurry,’he thought. ‘After all, there is the other half of my aunt’s advice. In any case, it would seem strange if I asked her to marry me so soon. We will see what happens tomorrow.’
14. “लेकिन मुझे कोई भी फैसला जल्दी में नहीं लेना चाहिए,” उसने सोचा। “आखिर मेरी चाची की सलाह का दूसरा हिस्सा भी है। वैसे भी, अगर मैं इतनी जल्दी उससे विवाह के लिए कहूँ तो अजीब लगेगा। चलो देखते हैं कल क्या होता है।”
15. The next day, all who were staying in the castle were to go out riding. The prince stood for a moment at his window, looking down at the courtyard, where there was a great bustling and making ready.
15. अगले दिन, जो भी लोग महल में ठहरे हुए थे, वे सभी सवारी के लिए बाहर जाने वाले थे। राजकुमार कुछ समय के लिए अपनी खिड़की पर खड़ा रहा और नीचे आंगन की ओर देखने लगा, जहाँ बहुत हलचल और तैयारियाँ हो रही थीं।
16. Through the midst of all this an old woman was making her way. She had a basket of eggs on her arm, and carefully laid on top of it was a round flat cake, brown and spicy-looking, with a sugar heart in the middle of it, surrounded by pink and white sugar roses. She had made it for the king’s son. But she was confused by the bustle in the courtyard, and scurried here and there among the horses and people like a frightened hen.
16. इस सारी भीड़भाड़ के बीच एक बूढ़ी औरत रास्ता बना रही थी। उसके हाथ में अंडों की एक टोकरी थी, और उसके ऊपर बहुत सावधानी से रखा गया था एक गोल, चपटा केक, जो भूरे रंग का और मसालेदार दिख रहा था। उसके बीच में एक शक्कर का दिल था, और उसके चारों ओर गुलाबी और सफेद शक्कर की गुलाबें सजी थीं। वह केक राजा के बेटे के लिए बनाया गया था। लेकिन आंगन की हलचल से वह घबरा गई और घोड़ों और लोगों के बीच इधर-उधर दौड़ने लगी, जैसे कोई डरी हुई मुर्गी।
17. One of the king’s servants pushed her out of the way. Her foot caught on a stone; she tripped and fell. The eggs rolled out of the basket. Plop! Plop! they went on the stones. There was a fine mess, and the beautiful cake lay in the midst of it, in fragments.
17. राजा के एक सेवक ने उस बूढ़ी औरत को धक्का देकर रास्ते से हटा दिया। उसका पाँव एक पत्थर से टकरा गया; वह लड़खड़ा कर गिर पड़ी। अंडे टोकरी से निकलकर लुढ़कने लगे। पट-पट कर पत्थरों पर गिरने लगे। वहाँ एक बड़ी गड़बड़ हो गई, और सुंदर केक भी उसी बीच में टूटकर बिखर गया।
18. The old woman was so upset that she forgot everything and stood in the middle of the courtyard surrounded by her broken eggs, scolding away at the top of her voice and shaking her old umbrella at the whole crowd.
18. बूढ़ी औरत इतनी परेशान हो गई कि वह सब कुछ भूल गई और टूटे हुए अंडों के बीच आंगन के बीचों-बीच खड़ी हो गई। वह जोर-जोर से सब पर चिल्लाने लगी और अपनी पुरानी छतरी को सब लोगों की तरफ हिलाकर गुस्सा ज़ाहिर करने लगी।
19. Everybody laughed; and indeed she was a rather comical sight as she stood there shouting. Then the whole party rode away-all excepting one, and that was Mellidora.
19. सब लोग हंसी में फूट पड़े; और सच में, वह एक मजेदार दृश्य थी, जब वह वहाँ खड़ी होकर चिल्ला रही थी। फिर पूरी पार्टी चली गई, सिवाय एक के, और वह थी मेलिडोरा।
20. She slipped down from her horse and went swiftly to where the old woman sat upon the stone steps leading up to the castle doors. Her anger was gone, but she looked the picture of misery.
20. वह अपने घोड़े से कूद पड़ी और तेज़ी से उस जगह गई जहाँ बूढ़ी औरत पत्थरों की सीढ़ियों पर बैठी थी, जो महल के दरवाजे तक जाती थीं। उसका गुस्सा गायब हो चुका था, लेकिन वह बहुत दुखी दिख रही थी।
21. The prince could see how Mellidora stooped to pick up the broken cake and tried to put it together again, and how kindly she put her arm round the old woman’s shoulder, coaxing her with friendly words.
21. राजकुमार देख सकता था कि कैसे मेलिडोरा टूटे हुए केक को उठाने के लिए झुकी और उसे फिर से जोड़ने की कोशिश की, और कैसे उसने अपनी कोमलता से बूढ़ी औरत के कंधे पर हाथ रखा, उसे अच्छे शब्दों से सांत्वना देते हुए।
22. And when the prince came down into the courtyard to see what more might be done, the sun shone upon Mellidora’s gentle face, and he saw that her eyes were full of tears.

23. Then the prince knew that he had indeed found the one whom he sought, for here was a girl who laughed when others cried, and cried when the others laughed.

24 The old woman was taken to the king’s son, where she was so kindly received that she forgot all her troubles.

25. The prince waited no longer. That very day he asked Mellidora to marry him, and as she loved him too, they got married very soon and lived happily ever after.
