A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete thought, idea or statement, usually consisting of a subject and a predicate, and typically begins with a capital letter and ends with a punctuation mark, such as a period, question mark or exclamation point. It is a basic unit of communication in written and spoken language.
Kinds of Sentences
There are major four kinds of sentences as given below. There is one more kind called ‘Optative Sentences’ but that kind can be included in Exclamatory Types and so this kind is not mentioned here. The remaining Four kinds are explained below:
Declarative Sentence:
A declarative sentence makes a statement or expresses a fact. It provides information or conveys an idea without asking a question or giving a command. These sentences often begin with a subject, followed by a verb and an object, and end with a period. Examples: “I like chocolate ice cream.” or “The sky is blue.”
Interrogative Sentence:
An interrogative sentence asks a question and requires a response. It often begins with a question word (who, what, where, when, why, how) or an auxiliary verb (am, is, are, do, does, have, has, can, could, etc.), followed by a subject and a main verb. Interrogative sentences end with a question mark.
Examples: “What time is it?” or “Are you coming to the party?”
Imperative Sentence:
An imperative sentence gives a command or makes a request. It often begins with a verb in the base form (without “to”), followed by a direct object or an indirect object, and it usually ends with a period, but sometimes with an exclamation point. Imperative sentences are often used to give instructions or advice.
Examples: “Close the door, please.” or “Please, be quiet.”
Exclamatory Sentence:
An exclamatory sentence expresses strong emotion, such as excitement, surprise, anger, or joy. It often begins with an interjection (such as “wow”, “oh”, “ouch”, etc.), or with “what” or “how”, followed by a subject and a verb. Exclamatory sentences end with an exclamation point.
Examples: “What a beautiful day it is!” or “How amazing that was!”
